About the District Attorney Candidates:

Richard Aborn (www.abornforda.com):
Richard began his long career in criminal justice by prosecuting violent felonies, including homicides, during five years as an Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan DA’s office. After founding and managing a law firm, Richard then went on to national prominence as a gun control leader. As the national president of Handgun Control, Inc. (now the Brady Campaign) for five years, Richard was the principal strategist behind the successful passage of the Brady Bill, the national assault weapons ban. A member of the NYS Bar Association Task Force on Wrongful Convictions, Richard was a leader in helping pass a new state law calling for expanded use of DNA to fight crime and quickly exonerate the innocent. He has also long pressed for overturning the Rockefeller Drug Laws, and has been a firm and consistent opponent of the death penalty.

Leslie Crocker Snyder (www.snyderforda.com):

As an Assistant District Attorney, Leslie was the first woman in the DA's office to try both felony and homicide cases. During her nine years in the Office, she founded and led the Sex Crimes Prosecution Bureau, the first in the nation and a model throughout the country. She is the co-author of legislation including New York's Rape Shield Law. Leslie also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General, prosecuting corruption in the criminal justice system. She then went into private practice for three years before returning to public service as the Deputy Criminal Justice Coordinator and head of the Arson Strike Force, and later as a Judge to the Criminal Court and Judge on the New York State Supreme Court and the Court of Claims, where she presided over narcotics, drug and organized crime cases. In 2007 she worked in New Orleans on a Justice Department grant to help Katrina victims. Leslie is currently a partner at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP.

Cyrus Vance (www.cyvanceforda.com):

Cy Vance, a graduate of Yale University and Georgetown University Law School, is a former prosecutor and veteran trial lawyer who has served for over a quarter century in the courts, in his community, and in government. Born and raised in Manhattan, Cy returned to New York City after law school to become a prosecutor under Robert Morgenthau and worked in the D.A.’s Rackets Bureau, which investigates corruption and criminal enterprises. After leaving the District Attorney’s office, Cy moved to Seattle and co-founded McNaul Ebel Nawrot Helgren & Vance, PLLC, which under his joint leadership became one of the pre-eminent litigation firms in the Northwest. Vance returned to New York in 2005 to practive law at a leading litigation firm, and served on Governor Paterson’s Commission on Sentencing Reform. He also serves as a member of the Criminal Justice Council of the New York City Bar Association, the Federal Bar Council, and the New York Council of Defense Lawyers.
